Brompton Skip Hire — Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the approach Brompton Skip Hire takes to protect employees, contractors, customers and the public in all aspects of our rubbish company operations. The policy is applicable to all activities related to skip hire, waste removal and rubbish collection across our defined service area and applies to every person working for or on behalf of the organisation. The objective is to maintain safe systems of work, prevent injury and ill health, and ensure compliance with applicable health and safety standards.
All staff must understand their roles and responsibilities. Managers are required to implement and maintain safe working procedures, undertake suitable and sufficient risk assessments, and ensure corrective actions are taken. Employees and sub-contractors must take reasonable care for their own safety and co-operate with management by following instructions and using provided safety equipment.
The scope of this policy covers vehicle operations, skip loading and placement, manual handling, hazardous waste handling, site safety, and public safety where our skip hire service area interacts with customer premises or roadways. Rubbish collection tasks such as lifting, carrying and mechanical handling of waste containers are included, along with vehicle loading, securing loads and traffic management.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We conduct documented risk assessments for routine and non-routine tasks and use those assessments to define control measures. Where risks cannot be eliminated they will be reduced by a combination of engineering controls, administrative controls and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Key controls for our skip hire and waste removal activities include:
- pre-use vehicle and equipment inspections;
- clear exclusion zones during skip loading and unloading;
- weight limits and correct loading techniques to prevent overload;
- segregation and identification of hazardous materials;
- use of high visibility clothing, gloves, eye protection and safety boots.
All procedures will be reviewed when there is a significant change to operations or after an incident. The company adopts a hierarchy of controls to prioritise measures that reduce reliance on human behaviour alone.
Responsibilities and Training
Responsibility for health and safety rests at all levels of the organisation. The directorate and site supervisors maintain oversight and ensure adequate resources for safety. Employees are expected to report hazards and near misses, follow safe work instructions and attend required training.
Training programs cover vehicle safety, manual handling, use of lifting equipment, hazardous waste awareness and traffic management for staff operating within the rubbish removal service area. Training is recorded and reviewed periodically for competency, and refresher training is provided as necessary.
Specific attention is given to safe operation of plant and vehicles used in skip hire and waste collection, ensuring all drivers and operators hold required licences and that vehicles are maintained to a high standard to reduce mechanical failure risk. Maintenance schedules, pre-shift checks and defect reporting procedures ensure that equipment remains safe to use.
Emergency preparedness is essential. The policy requires clear procedures for spill response, first aid, fire, road traffic incidents and hazardous material exposure. Emergency arrangements include access to suitably trained first aiders, appropriate spill kits and communication plans that protect staff and the public until emergency services arrive.
Our approach to hazardous or controlled waste emphasises segregation at source, correct labelling, secure containment and documentation. We will not accept unknown or illegally presented hazardous materials without prior assessment and authorisation. The process aligns with responsible waste management and ensures safety during handling and transport.
Safe traffic management is critical where skips are placed on roads or pavements. Controls include use of approved signage, cones, banksmen where needed, and coordination with local traffic authorities when long-term or kerbside placements are required. The aim is to protect both operatives and the public in all rubbish collection and skip hire operations.
Monitoring, auditing and incident investigation are core elements of our safety management. We will conduct periodic audits, investigate accidents and near misses to identify root causes, and implement corrective actions. Records of incidents, training, inspections and maintenance are retained to demonstrate continual improvement and regulatory compliance.
Contractors and temporary workers are expected to meet Brompton Skip Hire standards. Sub-contractors must provide evidence of competence, insurance and safe systems of work before commencing tasks within our skip hire and waste removal service environment.
Policy review: This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed at least annually or following significant operational changes, incidents, or legislative updates. The review ensures the policy reflects current risks, good practice and the evolving nature of waste removal and rubbish collection activities. Everyone has a part to play in creating a safe workplace; by working together we protect people, property and the environment.
Commitment: Brompton Skip Hire is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and expects all personnel to actively support this policy through safe conduct and reporting. This statement stands as the framework for safety governance in all our rubbish company operations.
Application: This policy applies to all company operations including skip placement, hire, collection, transportation and disposal activities when operating within our service area. It will be communicated to all staff, remembered in day-to-day activities, and enforced by management to ensure consistent standards.
Signed: Management — Brompton Skip Hire. Policy effective from date of issue and subject to regular review.
